Study With Us

Interested in games, play and technology? What  about solving real-world problems, working with industry and progressing the knowledge economy? At the Centre for Game Design Research we investigate how games, design and research intersect and how this information can be applied to a range of contemporary sectors.

As researchers we would like to encourage diverse PhD applications from applicants who are interested in working in game design research; who want to create innovative play experiences; are intrigued by interactive technologies; see opportunities for greater global connection and who would like to explore new digital methodologies.

Completing a higher degree by research with the Centre offers you a chance to engage with key academics and become a part of a supportive environment for research candidates. Supervisors within the Centre are internationally recognised and specialise in areas such as artificial intelligence, data metrics, game design methodology, gamification, interactive artform, exertion games, medical intervention devices, virtual reality and online education. The Centre’s areas of specialisation can be found under Labs.

To support the student experience, the Centre encourages our student body to teach in undergraduate classes; present at events, conferences and exhibitions; collaborate in weekly reading groups and access publication critique in our fortnightly discussions. Students of the Centre drive the postgraduate experience by feeding into activities and workshops. In addition PhD students of the Centre will be able to complete part of their PhDs at either the Melbourne City Campus or RMIT Barcelona.

For applications and further information for prospective postgraduate research students, please see the Media and Communication Higher Degrees by Research information page and here for RMIT scholarships.

You can find out more about the Centre’s research strengths and activities on our website.
